The genus Hypoxis (Hypoxidaceae) comprises about 90 species of cormous geophytes, distributed almost worldwide but best represented in southern Africa. The hard, fleshy corms, yellow-orange inside, produce tufts of narrow, strap-like, often hairy leaves. Star-shaped flowers with six tepals, usually bright yellow and sometimes tinged green or white on the reverse, are borne on slender stems in spring or summer depending on the species. Plants need full sun and well-drained soil. As the exact species could not be confirmed, this description covers the genus generally.
