The genus Herpolirion contains a single species, Herpolirion novae-zelandiae, native to New Zealand and southeastern Australia (New South Wales, Victoria, Tasmania), where it forms rhizomatous, grass-like swards in wet, peaty alpine grassland above about 1200 m. Narrow, fleshy, often glaucous leaves grow in dense tufts. Relatively large flowers for the plant's size, white to pale blue with six tepals, open in December-January, the Southern Hemisphere summer. As the exact identity could not be fully confirmed, this description covers the genus, which is essentially represented by this single species.
