Rhodophiala bagnoldii

Endemic to Chile, notably the Atacama Desert, Rhodophiala bagnoldii (Amaryllidaceae) grows in arid, sharply drained soils. Its tunicated bulb, 4-7 cm across, is buried deep (20-30 cm). Leaves are narrow and strap-shaped. The 35-50 cm stem bears an umbel of one to six tubular to bell-shaped flowers, 4-6 cm wide, pale to bright yellow, sometimes golden or reddish. Flowering occurs in late summer to autumn. Like other Chilean bulbs, it needs full sun, very sharp drainage and a completely dry summer dormancy, tolerating only occasional watering while in leaf and bloom.
