The genus Vellozia (Velloziaceae) comprises numerous xerophytic species mostly endemic to Brazil, especially the state of Minas Gerais, with one species extending to Panama. These plants form a short, thick, woody caudex densely clothed in the persistent bases of narrow, rigid leaves, adapted to the arid rocky outcrops (campo rupestre) where they grow. Regular flowers with an inferior ovary arise singly in the leaf axils, followed by a woody capsule. These are not true bulbous plants. Grown in full sun, very sharp drainage and minimal watering. As the exact species could not be confirmed, this description covers the genus generally.
