Moraea x villosa / gigandra

This entry most likely refers to Moraea villosa, the peacock moraea, one of the genus's most spectacular species, endemic to South Africa's Western Cape (sometimes confused with the closely related M. gigandra, which bears equally large flowers). A cormous geophyte reaching 40 cm, it has a single narrow, hairy leaf. Large, lightly scented flowers with purple, lilac or pink outer tepals (orange in subspecies elandsmontana) show yellow nectar guides edged with iridescent green, blue and navy crescents resembling peacock feathers. Grown in full sun and well-drained soil, with corms lifted in summer after spring flowering to avoid rot.
