Moraea unguiculata

Endemic to South Africa (Eastern, Northern and Western Cape provinces), Moraea unguiculata grows on shale slopes in renosterveld vegetation, from Namaqualand to Port Elizabeth and in the Karoo mountains. A cormous geophyte reaching 50 cm, sometimes branched, it has a single linear leaf, often trailing, usually exceeding the stem. Small flowers, white, cream or brownish and rarely violet, bear nectar guides spotted brown and three-pointed inner tepals; the species name refers to the slender claw at the base of the tepals. Flowering occurs from September to November. Like other Moraea, it needs full sun, well-drained soil and a dry summer rest.
