Gladiolus guthrie

Native to sandstone outcrops of the Western Cape, South Africa, Gladiolus guthriei - the Rock Afrikaner - is one of the earliest Gladiolus to flower in winter, from April to June. This winter-growing, summer-dormant cormous geophyte bears lightly hairy sword-shaped leaves. It produces a spike of 3 to 9 fragrant, pale yellow to straw-coloured flowers generously streaked and speckled with mauve to dark magenta. It requires well-drained soil, a sunny position, and the cool, wet winters typical of the Cape's Mediterranean climate.
