Gladiolus maculatus

Endemic to the southern Cape of South Africa, from the Eastern to the Western Cape, notably the Overberg region, Gladiolus maculatus grows in heavy clay renosterveld soil. This cormous geophyte reaches 70 cm, with 3 to 4 leathery linear leaves. Its long-tubed flowers, dull yellow to lilac, speckled brown or purple, with wavy margins and curled tips, are fragrant by day and evening. It requires well-drained clay to loamy soil and a sunny position, with a dry summer rest.
