Gladiolus orchidiflorus

Ranging from southwestern Namibia to the western Free State, through Namaqualand, Gladiolus orchidiflorus - the Orchid Kalkoentjie - grows in clay or sandstone soil in semi-arid grassland. This sword-leaved geophyte, with a thickened leaf midrib, produces in spring a spike of 5 to 12 flowers in unusual burgundy and chartreuse tones. It requires well-drained soil and a sunny position, with a dry summer rest typical of southern Africa's winter-rainfall regions.
