Gladiolus venustus

Widely distributed across the interior of southern Africa's winter-rainfall regions, in the Northern and Western Cape, Gladiolus venustus - the kalkoentjie - grows on dry clay and sandstone slopes. This 20-35 cm geophyte, with 5 or 6 leaves with a raised midrib, produces a spike of 5 to 8 fragrant flowers, mauve to deep purple or pink on the upper tepals, marked with a greenish-yellow band on the lower tepals. It flowers in spring, August to October. Not threatened, it requires well-drained soil and a sunny position.
