Babiana scariosa

Ranging from the Bokkeveld Mountains in the northwestern Cape to the western Little Karoo, South Africa, Babiana scariosa grows in dry sandstone or clay soil, in fynbos and karroid scrub. This 10-40 cm Iridaceae, with linear-lanceolate, pleated leaves, produces blue to mauve flowers in August-September, marked with white to pale yellow on the clawed, fused lower tepals. It requires well-drained soil and a sunny position, with a dry summer rest.
