Cyanella cygnea

Endemic to the Northern Cape, South Africa, from the Richtersveld to Komaggas, Cyanella cygnea grows in renosterveld, a habitat threatened by overgrazing. This small cormous Tecophilaeaceae produces flowers with tepals 8-10 mm long, notable for their narrow, thread-like, S-curved upper filaments. It is closely allied to Cyanella orchidiformis, sharing large fruit and a patterned perianth. It requires well-drained soil and a sunny position, with a dry summer rest.
