Galaxia Barnardii

A range-restricted South African species known only from the area around Caledon in the southwestern Cape, Moraea barnardii (formerly classified in the genus Galaxia as Galaxia barnardii) grows in clay soil on flats and hills. This tiny, stemless Iridaceae, barely 5 cm tall, produces pink to purple flowers with an almost black centre. It is closely related to Moraea longiaristata, from which it differs in lacking that species' long inner tepals. It requires well-drained soil and a sunny position.
