Geissorhiza purpureolata

A rare Iridaceae of poorly drained, damp flats in the southwestern Cape, mainly between Paarl and Piketberg and in the upper Tulbagh Valley, South Africa, Geissorhiza purpureolutea is notable for flowers considerably larger and more brilliantly coloured than most species in the genus. Threatened by urban expansion, it makes a fine pot specimen, though its small stature makes little impact in open ground. It requires soil that is moist during the growing season but well drained, and a sunny position.
