Geissorhiza mathewsii

Rare and threatened, endemic to the area around Darling and Malmesbury in the southwestern Cape, South Africa, Geissorhiza mathewsii grows on wet sandy flats. This small, 8-18 cm Iridaceae produces violet flowers with a bright red centre, often separated by a white band - a feature distinguishing it from the closely related, otherwise larger and longer-styled Geissorhiza eurystigma. It requires well-drained soil, moist during the growing season, and a sunny position.
