Gladiolus watsonius

Native to granite and clay slopes of the northwestern and southwestern Cape, South Africa, in renosterveld, Gladiolus watsonius produces, from late winter to early spring, an erect spike of red to orange flowers on a 30-70 cm stem. The species was long classified in the genera Watsonia, then Homoglossum and Antholyza, before being placed in Gladiolus. It requires well-drained clay soil and a sunny position.
