Widespread from the Cederberg to Port Elizabeth, across the winter-rainfall zones of the Eastern and Western Cape, South Africa, Gladiolus liliaceus grows on clay slopes. This 30-80 cm geophyte bears 1 to 6 large, trumpet-shaped flowers that change colour through the day: brown, dull pink, tan, purplish or greenish-cream by daylight, turning bluish-mauve at dusk while becoming intensely fragrant, with clove-like notes. It flowers from late August to December and requires well-drained clay soil and a sunny position.
