Gladiolus inflatus

Native to the mountains of the Western Cape, South Africa, where it grows in open sandstone habitat among shrubs and restios, Gladiolus inflatus produces, in spring, short-tubed flowers in pink to mauve, purple or violet, marked on the lower tepals with dark, spear- or spade-shaped purple-red patterns, the median lower tepal usually centred with yellow. Reaching 25-60 cm, it requires well-drained, stony soil and a sunny position.
