Freesia leichtlinii

Endemic to the Cape provinces of South Africa, Freesia leichtlinii often grows wedged among rocks, where its conical corm, about 10 mm wide and covered in finely netted fibrous tunics, is protected from grazing animals. The sword-shaped leaves taper to a sharp point and stand upright or slightly leaning. The flower spike, bent horizontally, carries 2 to 9 highly fragrant flowers produced from midwinter into spring (late July to early October). This is the species from which most garden freesias descend. It requires well-drained soil, a sunny position, and a dry summer dormancy.
