Hesperantha marlothii

Native to the rocky Roggeveld area and the northwestern Cape of South Africa, Hesperantha marlothii grows among stony outcrops in the winter-rainfall region. This cormous Iridaceae has a bell-shaped corm with a flat base and bears three to six cream flowers, delicately scented with a sweet, clove-like note, with a brown or reddish reverse. The floral tube is recurved, typical of the genus. Flowering occurs in late winter and early spring, with the flowers opening in the evening and being pollinated by moths. It requires well-drained soil and a sunny position.
