Hesperantha pauciflora

Endemic to the Western Cape of South Africa, Hesperantha pauciflora grows mainly on clay soils in renosterveld, as well as on the sandstone soils of the Bokkeveld Plateau. This cormous Iridaceae lies dormant through the hot summer months and begins growth with the first winter rains, flowering in spring. Unlike most species of the genus, its flowers, pink to purple and occasionally yellow, 20-25 mm across, do not open in the evening but from midday to late afternoon. The leaves are sword-shaped and pale green. Plants sometimes form dense pink carpets over old cultivated lands. It requires well-drained soil and a sunny position.
