Hesperantha purpurea

Described by Peter Goldblatt in 1984, Hesperantha purpurea is a cormous Iridaceae endemic to South Africa; its epithet refers to the purple colour of its flowers. Lacking detailed data specific to this species (exact distribution, habitat, flowering time), the description below applies to the genus in general: plants with hard, woody corm tunics and narrow sword-shaped leaves, producing spikes of star-shaped flowers in white, pink, purple or occasionally yellow, found in the southwestern Cape, the western Karoo and the Drakensberg. It requires well-drained soil and a sunny position. Species not confirmed in detail; description given at genus level.
