Moraea lewisiae (Hexaglottis)

Found on varied, mostly dry soils over a wide range from Clanwilliam to Humansdorp in the Cape provinces of South Africa, Moraea lewisiae (formerly placed in the genus Hexaglottis, as Hexaglottis lewisiae) reaches 30 to 60 cm tall. This cormous Iridaceae has whip-like leaves and fragrant yellow flowers pressed laterally along the flowering stem, with six roughly equal tepals and a style divided into six thread-like branches. Two subspecies are recognised, distinguished by the shape and size of the capsules and tepals. It requires well-drained soil and a sunny position.
