Ixia mostertae

Likely a simplified spelling of Ixia mostertii, this highly rare species is known from only three localities in the upper Breede River valley between Wolseley and Worcester, Western Cape, South Africa, on stony clay soils in fynbos and renosterveld. This cormous Iridaceae, with globose corms, reaches 450 mm tall, with slender stems bearing 3-4 sword-shaped leaves. The 5-12 flowers per spike range from deep pink or mauve to pure white, with a large dark blue or violet star-shaped centre. Listed as Endangered, it has lost much of its habitat. It requires well-drained soil and a sunny position.
