Ixia monadelpha

Widespread across the Cape region of South Africa, Ixia monadelpha reaches 20 to 40 cm tall, with a globose corm 12-20 mm across wrapped in soft, papery tunics. The stem, simple or lightly branched, bears 4 to 7 lance-shaped leaves, often loosely twisted. The dense, zigzag spike bears 4 to 12 flowers with tepals in grey-blue to turquoise, purple or pink, rarely white, with a darker centre ranging from dark green to almost black. The stamens, with filaments joined for at least half their length, give the species its name ("monadelpha": stamens united into one bundle). It requires well-drained soil and a sunny position.
