Lapeirousia anceps

Occurring from the sandy coastal plain of central Namaqualand near Hondeklip Bay, south through the mountains and coastal plain of the Western Cape to near Mossel Bay, Lapeirousia anceps has the widest distribution of the southern African Lapeirousia. This cormous Iridaceae, 10 to 30 cm tall, branches above ground and has ribbed linear leaves. Its flowers, recognisable by their short 5-10 mm bracts, are white to ivory, flushed pink outside, with a tube usually 50-80 mm long. It grows in acidic, nutrient-poor sandy soils, often among Restionaceae, and flowers profusely after a fire. It requires well-drained soil and a sunny position.
