Lapeirousia jacquinii

One of the most widespread species of the genus, Lapeirousia jacquinii grows on sandy soils in mountains and river valleys, often in disturbed ground, from the Western Cape (Cape Town, Worcester) north to Garies and Nieuwoudtville in the Northern Cape. This small cormous Iridaceae, 8 to 12 cm tall, has ribbed grey-green leaves and long-tubed flowers borne on a branched spike arising from two-keeled sheathing bracts. The tepals, dark purple to violet, bear white and red markings; the lower tepals are held close together while the larger upper tepal stands erect. Self-fertile, it reseeds readily. It requires well-drained soil and a sunny position.
