Lapeirousia montana

Endemic to the Northern Cape of South Africa, Lapeirousia montana grows on clay soils in the Roggeveld, from the Roggeveld Mountains to the Klein Roggeveld and Tankwa Karoo, flowering from August to September. This small cormous Iridaceae, 5 to 10 cm tall, has linear leaves, straight or slightly wavy. Like other species of the genus, it has a bell- or triangle-shaped corm with a flat base, wrapped in woody or densely compacted fibres. It grows in a semi-arid region, a habitat typical of many species of the genus in the northwestern Cape and Namaqualand. It requires well-drained soil and a sunny position.
