Moraea gracilenta

Growing on sandy soils, often near seeps or watercourses, in the Western Cape and as far as Namaqualand, South Africa, Moraea gracilenta is a cormous Iridaceae described by Goldblatt in 1976. Like most Moraea, it grows in winter and rests in summer, from a globose corm wrapped in light brown tunics. Its flowers, variable in colour between populations, ranging from purple to brick red, open in late afternoon and last only a few hours, between September and October. It requires well-drained soil and a sunny position, with a dry summer rest.
