Romulea monadelpha

Native to the Bokkeveld plateau and the Roggeveld escarpment in South Africa, where it grows in clay soils derived from dolerite, Romulea monadelpha, known as the "Karoo froetang", is a low cormous Iridaceae, 15 to 30 cm tall. Its round-based corm bears a tunic with curved, pointed teeth; three to five thread-like leaves, each with four grooves, emerge directly from the ground. The solitary, scentless flowers are burgundy red with black and cream blotches in the cup, sometimes salmon-coloured in certain populations. It requires well-drained soil and a sunny position.
