Romulea pearsonii

A rare South African endemic from the Northern Cape (Namaqualand and the Kamiesberg range), Romulea pearsonii grows on sandy, granite-derived slopes and flats, in fynbos and Succulent Karoo vegetation. This cormous Iridaceae reaches 20 cm tall and bears yellow, cup-shaped flowers in spring. The corm is globose to top-shaped, compressed or asymmetric, with the circular to crescent-shaped basal ridge typical of the genus. A geophyte of arid habitats, it becomes dormant over summer and resumes growth with the first winter rains. It requires well-drained soil and a sunny position.
