Gladiolus floribundus

Widespread across the winter-rainfall region of southern Africa, from the Cederberg to Alexandria in the Eastern Cape, Gladiolus floribundus grows on dry clay, sandy or limestone flats and slopes. This cormous Iridaceae reaches 20 to 45 cm tall, with broad leaves, and bears white to cream or pinkish flowers marked with a dark median streak on each tepal in late spring. Related to G. miniatus, G. grandiflorus and G. rudis, it differs from them through adaptations to different pollinators. Assessed as Least Concern, it requires well-drained soil and a sunny position.
