Gladiolus lewisiae

Known from a single locality in the southern Cape of South Africa, where its two putative parent species, Gladiolus caryophyllaceus and Gladiolus tristis, also occur, Gladiolus lewisiae shows morphology intermediate between the two, leading some botanists to interpret it as a natural hybrid rather than a distinct species in its own right. Like other Cape Gladiolus, it is a perennial cormous Iridaceae with sword-shaped leaves and tubular flowers borne in a spike. Its taxonomic status remains debated and has been re-examined in light of recent findings on related species. Cultivation requires well-drained soil and a sunny position.
