Gladiolus meliusculus

Endemic to the Western Cape of South Africa, known from Hopefield to the Cape Peninsula, Gladiolus meliusculus, the pink kalkoentjie, is a small cormous Iridaceae with a depressed-globose corm 12 to 16 mm across. Growing 12 to 20 cm tall, it has strongly ridged leaves and honey-scented pink to brick-orange flowers, marked with yellow on the lower tepals and edged in purple, produced in spring. The filaments are short, about 15 mm long. It requires well-drained soil, a sunny position, and a dry summer rest, like most spring-flowering Cape Gladiolus.
