Gladiolus uysiae

Endemic to the west-central Cape of South Africa, Gladiolus uysiae grows on clay slopes in renosterveld and flowers from late winter to early spring. This cormous Iridaceae produces fragrant, brownish-purple flowers veined in a darker shade, a subdued colouring typical of several small, insect-pollinated Cape Gladiolus. Like other species from the winter-rainfall region, it grows in autumn and winter, flowers in spring, then enters dry summer dormancy. It requires well-drained soil and a sunny position, with watering limited to the growing season.
