Iris oncocyclus

The name "Iris oncocyclus" does not refer to a single species but to the botanical section Oncocyclus of the genus Iris, which comprises about thirty species from steppes and rocky hills of the Near East, the Caucasus and central Anatolia. These rhizomatous irises are distinguished by a single, very large, almost spherical flower marked with a dark signal spot surrounded by a beard of hairs, and by the absence of nectar: they are pollinated by male solitary bees that use the flowers as overnight shelters. They require a dry summer climate and very sharply drained soil. As the precise species could not be confirmed, this description is given at the level of the botanical section.
