As the precise species is not recorded, this entry describes the genus Gethyllis, known as kukumakranka in Afrikaans. This bulbous Amaryllidaceae genus, around thirty species, is confined to the winter-rainfall region of southern Africa (Cape provinces, Free State, Namibia, Botswana). It is notable for often twisted or hairy leaves and sweet-scented fruit resembling tiny bananas, dispersed by animals that eat the flesh; flowering unusually occurs in the middle of the apparent dormant season. Grown in well-drained sandy soil, sunny position. Species not confirmed with certainty; description given at genus level.
