Calochortus argillossus

The name "argillossus" most likely corresponds to Calochortus argillosus, the clay mariposa lily, endemic to coastal central California, where it grows in hard clay soils of the coastal mountains. It is an unbranched perennial herb, 40 to 60 cm tall, with a single narrow basal leaf up to 30 cm long that withers at flowering time. The flower cluster bears 1 to 4 erect, bell-shaped flowers with rounded petals up to 4 cm long, white to pink, marked centrally with a spot or streaks of red, purple and yellow. The fruit is a narrow capsule. It requires well-drained soil and a pronounced dry summer dormancy.
