Calochortus venustus (rouge)

Calochortus venustus is one of the most colour-variable mariposa lilies of California, ranging from white through yellow, pink or deep purple, always marked with contrasting blotches. The so-called "red form" was selected for the intense ruby-red, velvety inner surface of its petals, contrasting with silvery backs; the large flowers measure several centimetres across on stems 40 to 75 cm tall. Like other Calochortus, this form requires perfectly drained soil and a strictly dry summer dormancy, typical of California's Mediterranean climate.
