Buthiastrum linifolium

The correct name for this plant is Duthiastrum linifolium (not "Buthiastrum"), the sole species of the genus Duthiastrum, a cormous Iridaceae endemic to interior South Africa (Cape provinces, Free State, Northern Provinces). As in some Crocus, the ovary remains underground during flowering; only as the seeds mature does the underground stem elongate to raise the capsules above ground. The long-tubed yellow flowers appear in autumn, opening in early afternoon and closing shortly after dark. Cultivation requires well-drained soil and a sunny position, with a dry summer rest.
