Lotus maculatus

Lotus maculatus is not a bulbous plant but a trailing Fabaceae, native to the Canary Islands, grown as an ornamental container or hanging-basket plant. It forms a mat of fine, silvery grey-green, finely divided foliage on trailing or cascading stems up to 60-90 cm long. The flowers, borne in twos or threes in the leaf axils, have a distinctive beak-like shape, yellow at the base shading to orange and red at the tip, hence the common name "parrot's beak." Flowering is abundant from spring through summer. It requires a sunny position, well-drained soil and winter protection in temperate climates.
