Dietes robinsoniana

Endemic to Lord Howe Island, off the coast of New South Wales, Dietes robinsoniana grows on exposed cliffs and forest margins, from sea level to the summit of the island's two peaks, Mount Lidgbird and Mount Gower. It is the largest species in the genus: its sword-shaped leaves, 4 to 7 cm wide, form robust clumps up to 1.5 m tall. From September to December it bears large white flowers marked with soft yellow and subtle lilac tones at the petal bases, each lasting only a day. Its closest relatives are found, remarkably, in Africa, illustrating a notable biogeographical disjunction.
