Dietes butcheriana

Endemic to South Africa, Dietes butcheriana grows in deep forest shade, on steep slopes and forest margins, in mistbelt forest of KwaZulu-Natal and coastal forest of the Eastern Cape. This evergreen rhizomatous Iridaceae, 0.5 to 1.2 m tall, forms clumps of broad, leathery, dark green fan-shaped leaves. The large, short-lived flowers, up to 60 mm across, open in late afternoon and fade by early evening: three pale yellow outer tepals with orange dots alternate with three white inner tepals. It differs from other Dietes species in its broad leaves and large seed capsules.
