Bomarea caldasii

Native to the Andean regions of South America, particularly Colombia and Ecuador, Bomarea caldasii is a perennial climber growing from short underground rhizomes, capable of twining up to 3 metres over supports. Its stems bear spirally arranged lance-shaped leaves. In late spring and early summer it produces dense terminal umbels of 30 to 45 tubular flowers, orange-yellow to red and spotted with purple-brown inside. It thrives in rich, well-drained soil, in a position ranging from light shade to full sun, and dies back where winters bring severe frost.
