Phallocallis gigantea

The name Phallocallis gigantea is a historical synonym of Phalocallis coelestis (also long placed in Cypella), the sole species of its genus, native to grasslands of Argentina, southern Brazil and Uruguay. It grows from a tunicated corm and produces fan-shaped, pleated, blue-green foliage. From summer into early autumn it bears goblet-shaped, lavender-blue flowers with three large outer tepals alternating with three small inner ones marked white, yellow and blue; each bloom lasts only a day but flowering continues in succession. It requires well-drained soil, a sunny position, and a dry winter dormancy.
