Hesperoxiphium huilense

The correct name for this Iridaceae is Hesperoxiphion huilense, described by Pierfelice Ravenna in 1979 and endemic to the Huila department of Colombia, from which its epithet derives. Like other members of the genus Hesperoxiphion, related to Cypella, it is a bulbous geophyte growing in humid tropical Andean habitats. The foliage is narrow and pleated, and the summer flowers show the six-tepalled, star-shaped form typical of the Tigridieae, often combining vivid yellow and blue tones. It requires well-drained soil, a bright position, and consistent moisture while in growth, with a drier rest during dormancy.
