Iris vartanii

Discovered in the hills near Nazareth by Dr Kaloost Vartan, who sent a specimen to botanist Michael Foster, Iris vartanii was described in 1885. Endemic to Israel, it is now considered endangered within its natural range, restricted to hilly regions such as the Judean mountains, Samaria, the Carmel and the lower Galilee. It is a geophyte with a fibrous-tunicated bulb, rarely exceeding 10 to 20 cm in height, bearing a single light-blue flower 5 to 6 cm across. It flowers at the height of winter, from late November to early February. It requires well-drained soil, full sun, and a dry summer rest.
