Gladiolus cardinalis

The waterfall gladiolus, Gladiolus cardinalis, is a cormous plant native to moist cliffs and the margins of waterfalls in the southwestern Cape of South Africa, where its corms lodge in rock crevices. In summer it produces a spike of 12 to 20 bright red flowers marked with white blotches on the lower tepals, on stems 30 to 60 cm tall. It is one of the parents behind modern hybrid garden gladioli. Now close to extinction in the wild, in cultivation it requires well-drained yet consistently moist soil, a sunny position, and cool summer conditions.
