Cypella hauthalii

Native to Argentina, southeastern Paraguay and southern Brazil, Cypella hauthalii is a bulbous grassland Iridaceae with winter growth, occurring in semi-shaded natural pastures. Its stems are very short, bearing bright violet, star-shaped flowers in spring. The species comprises two recognised subspecies, hauthalii and opalina, the latter with smaller, paler flowers. As with many South American Tigridieae, each flower lasts only a day but blooms continue in succession. It requires well-drained soil, a bright to semi-shaded position, regular watering through winter and spring, and a drier rest in summer.
