Cymbidium asignum

This entry most likely corresponds to Cymbidium insigne, a terrestrial orchid native to Thailand, Vietnam and Hainan Island in China, growing at elevation, between 1000 and 2600 m, in cloud forest on shallow sandy soils among sandstone rocks. Its ovoid pseudobulbs bear 6 to 10 narrow leaves, and the species produces, from autumn through spring, an erect spike up to 1.2 m tall bearing several large, 7–9 cm flowers in white to pastel pink. It contributed greatly to modern Cymbidium hybridizing. Cool to cold, bright growing conditions in a free-draining pot mix suit it well.
